When a mini split stops and a light starts flashing, it's telling you what's wrong, in its own language. Here's how to read it and what to do next.
Why is my mini split blinking?
Most mini splits stop and blink when their self-check finds a fault. Some blinks aren't faults at all: some brands blink during a test run, after a power cut, or as a filter reminder. Before you call, note:
- Which light is blinking (often labelled Operation, Timer or Economy).
- The colour.
- How many blinks between pauses.
- Any code on the indoor display or remote.
How do I read blink codes?
- Count the blinks between the pauses. Watch a few cycles to be sure.
- Find the model number on the label on the side of the indoor unit, under the front panel.
- Look up the code in the owner's or service manual for that model, usually on the manufacturer's website.
Codes vary by model, even within one brand, so always check the manual for your exact unit.
What do Mitsubishi Electric codes mean?
On many Mitsubishi Electric units, the operation indicator lamp blinks when the unit stops because of a fault. The manuals describe a self-check: with the remote display off, press the CHECK button twice and point the remote at the unit; the unit then reports the check code by beeps and lamp blinks. In the Mitsubishi manuals we checked, codes cover areas such as sensor errors, drain problems (P4, P5) and indoor-outdoor communication errors (E6, E7). Check your model's manual for its exact list.

What do Daikin codes mean?
Daikin units show a letter-and-number code. In Daikin's service manuals, U4 is a signal transmission (communication) error between the indoor and outdoor units, and A5 is freeze-up protection in cooling (the indoor coil got too cold) or high-temperature protection in heating. An A5 resets automatically once the temperature is back in range; a recurring one points to an airflow or refrigerant problem.
What do Fujitsu lights mean?
Fujitsu General says to count the blinks of each indicator lamp, typically the Operation and Timer lamps, and give the pattern and model name to service. It also notes that some patterns aren't faults: the lamps blinking alternately can follow a power interruption, and blinking together can mean a test run.
What do LG codes mean?
LG shows "CH" codes. According to LG's support pages, CH05 (and CH53 or E0 on some models) means a communication problem between the indoor and outdoor units, often after the outdoor breaker trips. LG also says CH32, CH33, CH36 and CH38 point to a refrigerant or compressor-related problem.
What about Carrier, Gree, Midea and other brands?
Most brands use similar letter-and-number codes (often starting with E, F or P) or blink counts. Their meanings differ by model, so check the manual for your unit rather than a general list online.
Will a power reset clear the code?
Sometimes. LG recommends turning the power off for about five minutes, then on again; if the code persists, request service. Do the reset once. If the same code comes back, the fault is real and needs a technician.
When should I call?
Call if the code returns after a reset, or if it points to communication, compressor or refrigerant problems. Those need diagnosis with proper tools. We service all major mini split brands, and our $125 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. If the unit is simply not cooling, see our guide to a mini split not cooling, and for prices see mini split repair cost.
