Ductless mini splits are reliable, but in Florida's humidity they need regular cleaning, and a few simple settings can make one look broken when it isn't.
Why isn't my mini split cooling?
| Cause |
Signs |
| Wrong mode |
Dry, Fan or Heat selected; air isn't cold |
| Setpoint too high |
Unit runs but barely cools |
| Dirty filters |
Weak airflow; dust on the filter screens |
| Dirty coil or blower wheel |
Weak airflow, musty smell, dark specks in the vanes |
| Blocked outdoor unit |
Leaves, plants or debris around the unit |
| Refrigerant leak |
Cool but not cold air; ice on the lines |
| Sensor or board fault |
Blinking lights or an error code |
| Power issue |
Indoor unit on but outdoor unit silent |
What can I check safely?
- The remote: fresh batteries, Cool mode, setpoint a few degrees below room temperature, fan on Auto or higher.
- The filters: open the front panel and wash the mesh filters following your owner's manual. Let them dry before refitting.
- The outdoor unit: clear debris and trim plants so air can flow freely.
- Power reset, once: turn the unit off at the breaker for a few minutes, then back on. If the problem returns, don't keep resetting it.
Are dirty filters and coils the problem?
Often, yes. In humid Florida air, dust and moisture combine on the coil and blower wheel inside the indoor unit, and mould can grow. That chokes airflow and cooling. Washing the filters is a homeowner job; cleaning the coil and blower wheel properly needs the unit bagged and disassembled. See our guide to mini split repair and cleaning cost.

What do blinking lights mean?
A blinking light or a code on the display is the unit reporting a fault. Note the colour, the number of blinks and the pattern before you call. A technician from our ductless mini split service in Pinellas Park can read the code and fix the fault.
Is it low refrigerant?
Refrigerant doesn't get used up. If it's low, there's a leak, usually at a flare fitting or the coil. Signs include cool-but-not-cold air, ice on the copper lines or indoor coil, and a unit that runs constantly. The fix is to find and repair the leak, then recharge; topping it off without a repair only delays the problem. Refrigerant work requires an EPA-certified technician.
When should I call a pro?
- Cooling doesn't improve after the safe checks.
- You see ice, or an error code returns after a reset.
- The outdoor unit won't run.
- You hear grinding or rattling.
