Look for these signs, especially together:
Often, yes. Replacing on your schedule lets you compare quotes, book the Duke Home Energy Check, arrange financing and avoid a rushed decision on a 94°F weekend. Spring and late autumn are usually the calmest times to plan a replacement.
Multiply the system's age in years by the repair cost. If the result is over 5,000, replacement usually makes more financial sense. Under 5,000, repair is often fine.
It's a rule of thumb, not a law. A well-maintained system with a cheap repair can be worth keeping even past 12 years, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
You can, but it's often a false economy. A new compressor in a 12-year-old condenser leaves all the other worn parts in place. Replacing only the outdoor unit can leave a mismatched system that doesn't hit its rated efficiency, and it doesn't qualify for Duke's rebate, which requires the condenser and air handler to be replaced together.
Sometimes. If you plan to sell within a couple of years, or the home is a rental, a 15.2 SEER2 system that just qualifies for Duke's rebate is often the sensible middle ground. If you'll stay for a decade or more, a higher-efficiency heat pump may pay back through lower bills and the larger rebate. We'll price both so you can see the difference.

Yes. The City of Pinellas Park requires a permit to replace a condenser, air handler or heat strips. We submit the city's A/C Changeout Application with the equipment's make, model, AHRI reference number and tonnage, and book the inspection. The fee is based on the job's value: a base amount for the first $1,000 plus a set amount for each additional $1,000, plus state surcharges. For the current schedule, call the city's Building Development division at 727-369-5647.
Be wary of anyone who offers to skip the permit. An unpermitted replacement can cause problems with insurance, rebates and selling your home.
New residential systems are now made with lower-GWP refrigerants, mainly R-454B and R-32, under the EPA's Technology Transitions rule. In 2026, EPA removed the January 1, 2026 installation deadline for R-410A split systems manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025, so that remaining stock can still be installed until it runs out (rule effective July 27, 2026).

To qualify, you need a free Duke Home Energy Check within the previous 24 months (for an emergency replacement, it can be done within 12 months afterwards), a licensed and insured contractor, and the condenser and air handler replaced together. As a Duke Energy approved contractor, we help make sure the paperwork is right. Duke's customer line for program questions is 800.254.8535.
Federal tax credit update. The federal 25C energy-efficiency credit doesn't apply to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, under the 2025 tax law (IRS FAQ). Don't count on it for a 2026 replacement.
Manufactured homes usually have a packaged unit outside or a split system with a downflow air handler in a small interior closet, connected to belly ducts under the floor. We match the replacement to that layout, check the crossover duct between sections, and inspect the belly duct for tears or disconnections before installing. The same city permit applies. Typical sizes are smaller than a site-built home's, so the cost is often lower, but access and duct condition can change the price.
Yes. GoodLeap offers home-improvement loans through participating contractors like us. GoodLeap lists fixed-rate terms of 5 to 15 years and loans up to $55,000, subject to credit approval. We'll show the monthly figure next to the cash price, after any Duke rebate.

Around 10 to 15 years for most central systems, depending on maintenance, salt exposure and run hours.
Usually yes, especially if it uses R-22 or needs a large repair. Use the 5,000 rule and ask us for a free quote.
Usually. Matching the indoor and outdoor units gives rated efficiency, and Duke's rebate requires both to be replaced together.
It depends on the system type, size and ducts. Ask us for a free quote; we'll check the belly duct and crossover too.
