Your system has two fan motors: one on top of the outdoor unit (the condenser fan motor) and one inside the air handler (the blower motor). Both run for most of the year in Florida, and both can fail. Here's what each costs and how to tell which one is the problem.
How much does it cost to replace an AC fan motor?

AC fan motor and condenser fan motor replacement cost: published local market estimates. Not a quote.
Price depends on the motor type, whether a universal or brand-specific motor is used, and access. Home Therapist's price book lists labour for an outdoor motor at $499 before the motor itself, which shows how much of the bill is the visit and the work, not just the part.
Condenser fan motor or blower motor: what's the difference?
- Condenser fan motor (outdoor): spins the fan on top of the outdoor unit and pulls air through the coil to release heat. If it stops, the compressor overheats and shuts down, and the house stops cooling.
- Blower motor (indoor): pushes air across the indoor coil and through your ducts. If it fails, you'll hear the outdoor unit running but feel little or no air from the vents.
What is the difference between PSC and ECM blower motors?
| Type |
How it works |
Cost |
| PSC (permanent split capacitor) |
Older, single- or multi-speed motor that uses a capacitor |
Lower cost to replace |
| ECM (electronically commutated) |
Variable-speed motor with built-in electronics; adjusts to airflow needs |
Higher cost; may need a matching module |
ECM motors use less electricity and run more quietly. If your system has an ECM motor, replacing it with the same type usually keeps the system working as designed. Some PSC systems can be upgraded to an ECM; ask whether it makes sense for yours.

Could it be the capacitor instead?
Often, yes. The capacitor gives motors the jolt they need to start and keep running. A weak capacitor is the most common summer failure in Florida, and it can look exactly like a dead motor:
- Humming but not spinning: the motor gets power but can't start.
- Fan spins if nudged: a classic weak-capacitor sign, but don't touch the blade yourself; capacitors hold a dangerous charge.
- Slow or intermittent fan.
A technician tests the capacitor with a meter before condemning the motor. A capacitor costs far less than a motor. Our guide to an outside AC unit not running walks through the signs.
Should I repair the motor or replace the system?
A motor is a mid-size repair. On a newer system, it's usually worth doing. On an older one, weigh it against everything else that may need doing soon:
| Situation |
Usually the better choice |
| System under about 10 years old |
Replace the motor |
| System 12+ years old, otherwise healthy |
Repair, but get a replacement price too |
| System 12+ years old with other problems |
Consider a new system |
If the motor failed because of a bigger problem, such as overheating from a dirty coil, fix the cause too or the new motor may fail early. For full-system prices, see our guide to AC unit cost by size.
Is the motor covered by warranty?
It may be. Many manufacturers cover parts, including motors, for 5 or 10 years when the system was registered. Labour is usually not included unless your installer offered a labour warranty. Check the model and serial number on the unit, or ask us to look it up.
What are the signs of a failing fan motor?
- The outdoor fan isn't spinning while the compressor runs.
- Weak or no airflow from the vents.
- Grinding, squealing or rattling from the outdoor unit or air handler.
- A burning smell near the unit.
- The motor runs hot or the breaker trips.
- The system shuts off and restarts repeatedly.
If you smell burning, turn the system off at the thermostat and breaker and call.
