The evaporator coil is the cold coil inside your air handler. Warm air from the house passes over it, the refrigerant inside absorbs the heat, and moisture condenses on the fins and runs to the drain. When a coil leaks, there's no reliable patch: the fix is a new coil, or a new system. This page explains what each option costs and how to decide.

AC evaporator coil replacement cost: published Florida figures. Not a quote.
So how much does it cost to replace an evaporator coil in AC systems around Pinellas Park? Most out-of-warranty jobs fall somewhere around $1,800–$3,000. The spread comes mostly from three things: the coil itself, how much refrigerant the system needs, and how hard the air handler is to reach. If the whole indoor unit is rusted or failing, compare our guide to air handler replacement cost.
What drives the price of a coil replacement?
- The coil: a matched coil from the original manufacturer costs more than a generic one, but keeps the system matched and protects the warranty.
- Refrigerant: after a leak, the system has to be recharged. A typical system holds several pounds, and refrigerant is billed by the pound.
- Access: a closet air handler is quicker to work on than one in a tight attic.
- The work itself: recovering refrigerant, cutting out the old coil, brazing in the new one, replacing the filter-drier, pressure-testing, pulling a vacuum and recharging. That's usually a half-day job once the coil arrives.
- Related parts: a corroded drain pan or failed expansion valve adds to the bill.
Is the coil covered by my manufacturer warranty?
Often the part is, but the labour and refrigerant usually aren't. Many major brands cover coils for 10 years when the system was registered after installation, and less if it wasn't. Check the label on your air handler for the model and serial number and look it up on the manufacturer's site, or ask us to check. Even with a covered coil, expect to pay for labour, refrigerant, the filter-drier and any other parts, which is why warranty jobs still run about $900–$1,500 in Florida.

Why do evaporator coils fail in Florida?
The main cause is formicary corrosion: tiny pinhole leaks that form in copper tubing when moisture combines with certain chemicals in household air. A coil in Florida is wet for most of the year, which gives corrosion plenty of time to work. Over years, pinholes let refrigerant escape slowly. Signs include the system cooling less and less, longer run times, ice on the refrigerant line, and a hissing or bubbling sound at the air handler.
A technician confirms a coil leak with electronic leak detection, bubble testing or a nitrogen pressure test. Topping off refrigerant without finding the leak only delays the problem, so ask how the leak was found before you approve a coil.
Should I replace the coil or the whole system?
A simple way to frame it: multiply the repair cost by the system's age. If the result is well over about $5,000, replacing the system usually makes more sense.
| Situation |
Usually the better choice |
| System under about 8 years old, coil under warranty |
Replace the coil |
| System 8–12 years old, coil out of warranty |
Get both prices and compare |
| System 12+ years old, or other repairs coming |
Replace the system |
| Older system using R-22 refrigerant |
Replace the system |
Example: a $2,400 coil on a 12-year-old system gives 2,400 × 12 \= $28,800, well past the threshold. The same coil on a 5-year-old system gives $12,000, but if the coil is under warranty the real cost drops sharply. For full-system prices, see our guide to AC unit cost by size.
Is a repair or a recharge ever enough?
Sometimes, but it's a short-term choice. Leak sealants exist, but contractors disagree about them, and they can't fix a coil that's corroding in many places. Recharging without fixing the leak means paying for refrigerant again. If budget is tight, ask for an honest estimate of how long a repair will last and compare that with financing a replacement.
Can I finance a coil replacement or new system?
Yes. We offer GoodLeap financing, on approved credit, for larger repairs and replacements. If you choose a new system, a qualifying high-efficiency system may also earn a Duke Energy rebate when the program's requirements are met; we can explain those when we quote. Estimates for new systems and replacements are free.
